During the most recent State Central Committee meeting on April 21, committee members voted almost unanimously to uphold the Halifax County Republican Committee’s decision to not allow two members into their committee purely because they “don’t like them.”
The issues within the Halifax Republican Committee started back in March 2022 when the majority of members accidently pre-filed to be members for 2022 prior to the designated pre-filing period. Though this error would be easily correctable through a committee vote, these now former members were never given an opportunity to rejoin the committee, despite having already paid membership dues for that calendar year. After this, the new chairman did not provide an opportunity for any individuals to attempt to join (or rejoin) the committee until August. Subsequently, several individuals were denied membership to the unit with no discernable reason given. Two of the individuals decided not to take it lying down and challenged the decision of the Halifax Republican Unit.
Thinking that the Republican Party of Virginia was open to anyone who believes in the Republican Creed, strives to live out Republican values, and works to get Republican representatives elected, they brought their appeal all the way to the SCC. They were wrong. The precedent that was just set by the Republican State Central Committee is staggering. Under their ruling local committees are able to deny membership to individuals arbitrarily. The SCC just gave local units the go ahead to turn themselves into social groups, country clubs, or just the ‘good ole boys’ gang.
