This $1,000 scholarship is part of The Dr. Michael Priest Charitable Trust, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed on Jan. 21 in honor of the late Dr. Michael Priest a star baseball player and academic stand-out who graduated from Halifax County High School in 2001.

Applications for the Dr. Michael Priest Scholarship will be available beginning Jan. 21, 2022. The scholarships are available to players of any high-school sport, and more than one scholarship may be given each year.

In addition to the scholarship, The Dr. Michael Priest Charitable Trust will be donating substantial gifts to qualified charities throughout the year, including St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Special Olympics and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

After graduating third in his class from Halifax County High School, Priest went on to play at the University of Virginia before transferring to Campbell University, where his college career flourished. Even with only three years playing baseball at Campbell University, Priest still ranks in the top 10 of seven categories — batting average (.358), most base hits (227), most home runs (36), most doubles (49), runs batted in (138) most total bases (398), and highest slugging percentage (.628). His 20-game hitting streak in 2006 still stands alone. He is the only Campbell baseball player to be named twice to the ESPN Academic All-American Team, graduating in 2006 with a 3.9 GPA.

“This guy was a tremendous human being. When I was a freshman at Campbell University, Priest was ‘big man on campus.’ Senior, Captain, best player, 3 hole hitter, Priest just did it all. He treated all of us freshmen like family on the first day he met us. He set the standard of how to treat people,” wrote one contributor on the organization’s website.
