Jimmy Clay and Woody Clay have established a stranglehold on the annual Halifax Country Club Two-Ball Golf Tournament.

The Clays won the tournament for the third year in a row Sunday, using a strong second-day effort to rally from a one-shot deficit and edge Championship Flight runner-ups Ronnie Moore and Phil Rinker by two shots.

“We both played fairly well Saturday, and Jimmy played real well today,” Woody Clay said after their win.

“They (Moore and Rinker) played well today. They kept the pressure on us all day. We managed to get a little leeway at the end by making a few birdies on the closing holes, and we pulled it out.”

Moore and Rinker carded a round of 64 in Saturday’s opening round and led the Clays by one shot heading into Sunday’s round. The pair turned in a round of 63 on Sunday, the lowest round of the day and the tournament.

Jimmy Clay said getting off to a good start on Sunday was one of the keys to their win.

“I knew if we could get off to a little faster start than we did Saturday we would be in good shape, and we did that,” Jimmy Clay said.

“There were a bunch of teams logjammed right there with us.”

Woody Clay said Jimmy’s ability to hit long drives was an advantage.

“Jimmy’s length is a big advantage over here,” Woody Clay noted.

“He hits the ball so far, and gets close to the green.”

“I started connecting the driver pretty solid,” Jimmy Clay added.

“When I hit my driver really good, it puts me in a range I like (to the green). Woody is always in the hole, which pretty much lets me go.”

Drew Lewis and Brad Mele finished third, four shots behind the winners, and Brad Thomasson and Mark Kidd took the fourth spot, one shot behind Lewis and Mele.

The duo of Sam Fisher and Eric Arthur Jr. won the First Flight, winning over Nick Thompson and Will Thompson in a match of scorecards after deadlocking with a 138 total.

Nelson Baskervill and Jody Nelson won the Second Flight, edging Bob Tysinger and Lyle Moore in a match of scorecards.
