The Halifax County Debs Dixie Softball all-star team was battling Sunday to stave off elimination in the Dixie Softball Debs World Series in Hopkins County, Texas, after a 15-5 loss to Tennessee in Saturday’s opening-round game.

Halifax County was scheduled to face either Alabama or Florida Sunday night at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.

The Virginia champion Halifax County Debs scored all five of their runs in the first four innings.

Tennessee got the upper hand on Halifax County with eight runs in the third inning. Two of the eight third-inning runs scored as the result of Halifax County errors, and two runs scored as the result of walks.

Halifax County had nine hits in the game, with Destiny Talbott, Gracie Wagstaff and Skye Newcomb leading the team with two hits.

Wagstaff started the game on the mound for Halifax County. She yielded six runs on four hits and struck out one batter in 2.1 innings of work. Savannah Farrar went to the mound in relief and threw 1.2 innings.

Tennessee racked up a dozen hits in the contest.
