The Halifax County Dixie Softball all-star Debs team will begin their trip to Ruston, Louisiana, Saturday to compete in the World Series after their dominate showing in the Virginia state tournament.
The Debs look to continue their hot streak winning five out of their six games in the Virginia state tournament.
Halifax vs. South Carolina, at 9 a.m. Saturday will be the opening game of the World Series.
Win or lose their first game Halifax will play again on Sunday in the double-elimination tournament.
Head coach John Newcomb spoke with the Gazette saying in order to prepare for the World Series “we must work on everything we didn’t do well in the state tournament, we will work harder and try to execute bunts and trick plays.”
“I think we can be close to the top, if not win it, we have the potential,” Newcomb continued saying before adding, “I don’t know how to explain it, I am so proud of the girls for what they have accomplished and allowing me to go on this journey with them. They have worked so hard.”
The Halifax County softball all-stars will not only be representing Halifax County nationally, but will also be representing Virginia in Ruston, Louisiana during the World Series.
“I want us to go all the way. I feel like we could win it all if we go and play well as a team,” shortstop Shamaya Hankins said.
Third baseman Skye Newcomb just wants to get closer with her team and be able to bond more.
“Even if we lose, I would still be proud of our team considering we won the Virginia state tournament,” Newcomb iterated.
The girls have been playing together for years, and just hope to keep their success going as a team in the World Series.
