The Halifax County Dixie Pre-Majors all-star team got off to a good start with a 10-8 win over Madison Heights Friday in the Virginia Dixie Pre-Majors State Tournament at South Hill but suffered back-to-back losses Saturday and were eliminated from the tournament.
Halifax County had 13 hits in Friday’s win over Madison Heights with Brock Poole leading the team with four hits. Nathan Comer, Jimmy Wilkins, and Joshawn Woods followed with three hits each. Christian Midkiff had two hits and Kamron Turbeville had one hit.
A good start staked Halifax County to the win. Singles by Midkiff and Pool opened a five-run first inning for Halifax County. Comer walked and Wilkins came up with a run-scoring hit. Woods also produced a run-scoring hit later in the inning as Halifax County took a 5-0 lead.
Madison Heights rallied to take an 8-6 lead after five innings, but Halifax County responded with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull out the 10-8 win.
On Saturday, Halifax County lost to Mecklenburg County 19-0 and was eliminated in a 14-0 loss to Charlotte County.
Halifax County had only four hits against Mecklenburg County with Poole, Turbeville, Midkiff and Wilkins getting one hit each.
Wilkins started the game on the mound for Halifax County, with Colin Saunders and Kendall Logan entering the game in relief roles.
Halifax County had three hits in the game against Charlotte County with Cale Newton, Poole and Turberville getting one hit each.
Turbeville started the game on the mound for Halifax County, and Halifax County held Charlotte County to just three runs through the first three innings. Charlotte County then capitalized on Halifax County errors and timely hits to pull away.
Saunders and Logan pitched for Halifax County in relief roles.
