BUENA VISTA — Randolph-Macon senior forward Gabby Nelson of Clover has been voted State Player of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
The VaSID released the 2019 Women’s Soccer College Division All-State Teams on Thursday.
The former Comet was previously named to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Women’s All-America Second Team and All-South Region First Team. She was ODAC Player of the Year and All-ODAC First Team.
In addition, Nelson was named to the 2019 ODAC All-Tournament Team and the 2019 Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
One of two team captains, Nelson started all 23 matches for the Yellow Jackets in 2019. She led the ODAC and finished third in the nation with 27 goals and nine game-winning goals. Nelson was fourth in the country with 62 points. She is second in program history in goals and points in a season. Jennifer Foster had 32 goals and 78 points in 1989.
Randolph-Macon College head soccer coach Jay Howell was selected as State Coach of the Year.
Under Howell, the ODAC Coach of the Year, the Yellow Jackets posted a 21-1-1 overall mark, setting program records with 21 victories and with 20 straight wins to start the season. R-MC went 10-0 in ODAC play and earned the top seed in the ODAC Tournament.
R-MC topped Lynchburg 4-1 in the quarterfinals, edged Bridgewater 1-0 in overtime in the semifinals and won on penalty kicks in the finals against Virginia Wesleyan to claim the program’s 13th ODAC title.
The 13th-ranked Yellow Jackets blanked Haverford 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling at top-seeded and eventual national champion Messiah in the second round. Howell completed his sixth season at R-MC.
