South Boston Business & Industrial/30 & Over Basketball League president Earl Womack (left) and league vice president Joel Medley (right) present Vivian Clark, a representative of the Senior Exercise Group (center) a check representing proceeds from the league’s benefit games held Oct. 20. The donation went to the Senior Exercise Group’s annual nursing scholarship that is awarded to a graduating Halifax County High School senior entering the field of geriatric nursing, or any field of nursing. Scholarship applications may be obtained through the high school guidance office. The Senior Exercise Group meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the South Boston Recreation Center.

It was pretty well expected that this was going to be a very competitive season in the South Boston Business & Industrial and 30 & Over Basketball League. So far that expectation is surfacing.

Only four undefeated teams remained among the 13 teams following Sunday’s session at the South Boston Recreation Center gym. Benchmark, newcomer Tvilum/Sentara and Italian Delight were sitting at 2-0 following Sunday’s action, and Youth Coaches won their season opener to go to 1-0, a half-game behind the lead trio.

Tvilum/Sentara topped Dollar General and Italian Delight edged AWNC I in games pitting undefeated teams against each other.

The list of undefeated will be trimmed by at least one team this coming weekend when Tvilum/Sentara faces Benchmark in this Sunday’s 5 p.m. game

League officials named five players for Player of the Week honors following Sunday’s session. That list includes Tevin Edmonds who scored 18 points for Tvilum/Sentara in the team’s win, Coy Talley of AWNC II who scored 15 points and Michael Hatcher of Eaton Corp. who led his team with 15 points.

Also earning Player of the Week honors were Robert Perkins who led Italian Delight with 18 points and Terrell Venable who led Youth Coaches with 31 points.
