South Boston resident and Radford University golfer Peter Gasperini made a good run but failed to earn a berth in this year’s U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament.

Playing in the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier At Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club in Columbia, Maryland, Gasperini was only two shots off of the lead and in a four-way tie for fifth place at the end of Tuesday’s opening round with a 3-under-par round of 69.

That put Gasperini in good position for Wednesday’s second round, but a difficult outing Wednesday dashed his bid to earn one of the four qualifying berths and two alternate berths for the U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament.

A round of 79 on Wednesday left Gasperini with a 39th-place finish among the 48 players that made the cut on Tuesday to advance into Wednesday’s second round.

A total of 120 golfers participated in this week’s sectional qualifier.
