Person High School softball coach Michael Ferrell took home conference coach of the year honors in his first season leading the Rockets. Ferrell is a native of Halifax County.

ROXBORO, N.C. — Person High School softball coach Michael Ferrell — a native of Halifax County — took home conference coach of the year honors in his first season leading the Rockets.

The Mid-State Conference released its all-conference selections after the conclusion of the state championships this weekend.

Ferrell had a stellar baseball career at Halifax County High School before moving on to Ferrum College. After college, he made a couple of coaching stops including a stint at Southern Middle School and Person High School before leaving to become the head baseball coach at Athens Drive High School.

Ferrell led the junior varsity baseball team at Person High School for the past couple of years and inherited the softball program this year.

The Rockets finished the season 11-11 and third in the hotly-contested Mid-State with an 8-6 league record. Person made the state playoffs after missing out on the postseason the year before. The Rockets upset West Brunswick in the first round to to get the program’s first playoff win since 2012.
