Fall baseball kicked off over the weekend with NC GameOn Sports Southeastern Ring Slugfest taking place at the Day Complex in South Boston and Oxford, North Carolina.
Two local teams came home with runner-up finishes.
The Spartans 12U team finished as gold bracket runner up. The Spartans entered bracket play as the number three seed in the ten-team division after going 2-0 in pool play on Saturday.
The Spartans defeated the second seeded NW Force 13-8 in the semifinals and advanced to take on the fourth seeded NCABC Fungo team in the championship game. The Spartans battled hard but ultimately came up short, losing 5-3.
The 10U Virginia Squires have quite the story of their own as they captured their second runner up plaque in their last two tournaments. The 10U Squires, playing in their first tournament since moving up from the 9U division, have steadily improved as they gain experience.
The Squires had lost 15 consecutive games when they first started competing as a team, but the players and coaches never gave up and fought hard to earn their wins. Over the weekend the Squires went undefeated in pool play and earned the number two seed in their division. Sunday morning they advanced to the championship game by defeating the Orange County Crushers 12-6. They advanced to the championship game against Eagles Elite Baseball where they fell 13-3.
Eagles Elite came out with hot bats and followed that up with great pitching and defense and even though the Squires threatened at times, Eagles Elite made the plays needed to limit the damage. While they didn’t come away with the championship, the Squires were still excited to receive their plaques and rings after a hard fought weekend of baseball.
NC GameOn Sports returns to South Boston this weekend with the 8th Annual Battle on The Diamond (Championship Cup). The tournament locations will be split between South Boston and Oxford, North Carolina, once again.
