The NC GameOn Sports GameOn Winter World Series kicked off on Saturday morning with several local teams vying for championships in their respective age divisions.
The 11U Virginia Squires went undefeated on Saturday and earned the top seed heading into Sunday’s bracket play. They were set to play their first game of bracket play on Sunday afternoon and were one win away from the championship game.
On Saturday, the 11U Squires defeated the East Coast Clippers 5-2 and Riptide 11U 9-5 to earn the top seed out the six teams in their division.
The 8U Squires were the top seed in the 13-team division heading into bracket play on Sunday.
The Squires defeated Pleasant Garden Elite 17-7 and Camel City baseball 7-2 to make it into the gold bracket as the top seed. The Squires were scheduled to take on Camel City Baseball again on Sunday afternoon with the winner going to the gold bracket championship game.
The 10U Squires went 1-1 on Saturday in bracket play, defeating the Orange County Crushers 13-3, and falling to the North Wake Sliders 5-4 to earn the No. 3 seed in bracket play. In the first game of bracket play for the 11U Squires, they fell to the Sliders again 11-7 to end their weekend one game short of the championship game.
In their 13-3 win over the Crushers, the Squires got 12 runs in the second inning to secure the win. Jacob Allen, Colten Conner, Owen Kitzmiller and Nate Mason each had two RBIs for the Squires and Corbin Mason and Conner Spell added one apiece.
The 12-run second inning got started by two walks, a wild pitch scoring a run and then a bunt by Kitzmiller scored a run. Connor doubled to right field to score two runs, followed by another double by Nate Mason to score two more. A steal of home, and an error scored two more runs followed by a bases loaded walk and a single by Spell to score another two before the inning ended.
The 14U Squires Navy came back from two losses in pool play on Saturday to win their opening game of bracket play in the silver bracket on Sunday. The Squires lost to the Ghost Elite 14-4, then lost on a walk off to the Hillsborough Hawks 5-4 before coming back to defeat the Garciaparra Baseball Group 4-1 on Sunday.
The Squires Navy made it into the championship game of the silver bracket with their win and will face the winner of the NC Top Prospects or the Virginia Squires Orange. The Squires Orange team also lost both of their pool play games on Saturday, the first to the Mooresville Biscuits 8-0 and then 11-1 to the Rockies.
Nathan Centers pitched a gem for the Squires Navy in their win over GBC on Sunday morning, going the full seven innings and only allowing three hits and one run while striking out eight batters.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Squires Navy went up 2-0 when Colin Mabe and Aaron Crutchfield both scored on an error by GBC.
The Squires scored two more runs in the inning on a Logan Smith single that scored Junior Powell and Mason Lovern.
