The South Boston Recreation Department will be hosting two memorial basketball games in honor of the late Brad Ballou on Saturday.
Ballou, a longtime fixture with the Halifax County Recreation Department and youth basketball, died at the age of 66 on June 11 due to an advanced stage of prostate cancer.
The memorial games will take place at 1 p.m. for ages 13-14 and 2:30 p.m. for ages 15-16 at the Mary Bethune Gym.
The price for entry into the game for athletes and spectators will be $5 each, and donations will be accepted in advance and on-site at the Mary Bethune Gym.
All proceeds from the games will raise money for a scholarship fund being established in honor of Ballou.
Ballou was a Comet basketball great and Elon College standout and was inducted into the Halifax County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 after spending a lifetime mentoring to local youth.
After college, Ballou returned home and became a mentor to countless youth during his time working at the recreation center for more than 30 years including time spent as the director and as a ball game referee.
“He always would find the underdog of the world and help bring them up. He would help their lives improve,” his niece Felishia Ballou-Thornton said.
