The dawn of the 2019 college football season is right upon us, and Professor Pigskin is back for his annual football contest — this year with a new perfect-score-takes-all prize format.

The Professor Pigskin Football Contest starts Monday, with the first contest entry blank to be found in Monday’s sports section of The Gazette-Virginian. The official Professor Pigskin Contest entry blank will appear on the sports pages of The Gazette-Virginian each Monday for the next 12 weeks.

“It’s great to get our football contest up and running for the new season,” The Professor said.

“A lot of people look forward to the start of the contest each year, and the contest has been a lot of fun for our participants over the many years that it has run. I’m sure this will be another fun season.”

The Gazette-Virginian’s annual Professor Pigskin Football Contest offers cash prizes for entrants with the most correct picks on a slate of college football games. This season’s Professor Pigskin Football Contest will have a different prize format than in previous years - a format that resembles a winner-takes-all format.

The weekly prizes of $30 for first place, $20 for second place and $10 for third place will be awarded if nobody turns in a perfect slate. If a contest entrant turns in a perfect slate, he or she will win all of the prize money (a total of $60), and there will be no first place, second place or third place prize awarded for that week. Should two or more contest entrants turn in a perfect slate of games, the $60 will be divided equally among the contestants that have a perfect score.

“The perfect score-takes-all format will, no doubt, have more contestants watching and studying their favorite teams more closely,” The Professor said.

“It will be interesting to see how many contestants come up with a perfect slate this season.”

Advertisements will be placed in different locations throughout the newspaper. Contest participants will have to look in the advertisements, find the games and write down their pick of the winner in the designated place on the contest entry blank.

All contest entry forms, whether mailed or brought to The Gazette-Virginian office, must be received in the office of The Gazette-Virginian by 5 p.m. each Friday in order to be eligible for the week’s contest judging.

Contest participants may mail their entries to Professor Pigskin Football Contest, P.O. Box 524, South Boston, Va. 24592 or turn their contest entry forms in at the Gazette-Virginian office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. any day Monday through Friday.

Fans participating in the contest are reminded to review and follow the contest rules listed on the contest entry form. Entries that do not meet the required rules will not be eligible for prizes.
