Two county youth all-star teams, the Halifax County Debs Dixie Softball all-stars and the Halifax County Dixie Boys 13-14 all-stars, open World Series play this weekend.

The Debs softball all-star team will be playing in the Dixie Softball Debs World Series in Hopkins County, Texas, while the Dixie Boys baseball team will be competing in the Dixie Boys World Series in Aiken, South Carolina.

In something of an unusual twist, the Virginia champion Debs team has a bye in Saturday’s opening round. Halifax County will play its first game at 9 a.m. Sunday against the winner of a Saturday match-up between Louisiana and Tennessee.

If Halifax County loses that game, it will play an elimination game Sunday at 6 p.m. Should Halifax County win its opener on Sunday, it will play a winner’s bracket game Sunday at 8 p.m. and will face the winner of an earlier game between host Hopkins County, Texas, and Texas.

The Virginia champion Halifax County Dixie Boys baseball team will play its World Series opener at 10 a.m. Saturday against Louisiana. Should Halifax County win, it will face the winner of Saturday’s Mississippi-Georgia match-up at 1 p.m. Sunday. If Halifax County loses the opener, it will face the loser of the Mississippi-Georgia contest in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Halifax County’s Dixie Boys team won the Virginia state tournament with a 6-0 record and out-scored its opponents 55-11. In addition, the team won the Sportsmanship Award in the state tournament.

The Halifax County Debs softball team went 5-1 in winning the Virginia state tournament, dethroning three-time defending state champion Prince Edward-Farmville in the process.

There are only two players on the team who played school ball, and only they and two other players on the team actively play travel ball.
