The Halifax County Old Timers Baseball League kicked off its 2019 season Sunday at Halifax County High School, presenting honors and recognizing this season’s participating teams.
Prior to the opening game, league commissioner Tigue Day Jr. announced the induction of Jeff Snead into the league Hall of Fame. Snead is one of a handful of veteran award-winning players in the league.
Also on Sunday, the Halifax County Old Timers Baseball League dedicated its 2019 season to Barbara Hudkins, who is beginning her sixth year of playing in the league, and to former Halifax County High School baseball standout and University of Virginia pitcher Andrew Abbott. Abbott threw the ceremonial first pitch to open the season.
In addition, the league recognized award winners from the 2018 season. Snead received the 2018 Tournament Most Valuable Player Award and the Triple Crown of Pitching Awards that included awards for most wins, most strikeouts and lowest earned run average.
Kevin Seamster was presented the 2018 Rookie of the Year Award.
Jay Berry was recognized as the winner of the 2018 Regular-Season Most Valuable Player Award, and the recipient of awards for highest batting average, most RBIs and most hits.
