The Halifax County American Legion Post 8 Junior Legion baseball team played well at times but dropped a doubleheader to the Roanoke Cutters by scores of 9-3 and 15-13 Saturday in Roanoke.

Saturday’s pair of losses dropped Post 8’s season record to 6-7 overall.

Halifax County had nine hits in the 9-3 opening-game loss, with Kyle Barker and Luke Fulcher leading Post 8 with two hits each. Blake Duffer, Nathan Comer, Jackson Newton, Dillon Fisher and Dylan Newton all had one hit each. Comer had 2 RBIs and Fulcher had 1 RBI.

Roanoke took the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished it. Post 8 cut the deficit in half with a run in both the second inning and third inning.

Jackson Newton walked to start the second inning and scored on a double from Fulcher. Dylan Newton walked to open the third inning and scored on a hit by Barker.

Roanoke plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 7-2. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Roanoke a 9-2 lead.

Halifax County scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final 9-3 count. Dylan Newton hit a single with one out in the seventh inning, moved to third base on a hit by Barker and scored on a single from Nathan Comer.

Post 8 took the early lead in the nightcap with two runs in the top of the third inning that produced a 2-0 lead. Fulcher came up with a double and scored when Comer reached base on an error. Comer scored when Fisher reached base on an error.

Roanoke rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a six-run lead at 8-2. Halifax County Post 8 scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning with the help of run-scoring hits from Fulcher and Comer to pull to within two runs at 8-6.

Post 8 surged into the lead with a run in the fifth inning and six runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 13-8. Dylan Newton reached base on an error and scored on a hit from Duffer in the fifth inning, and Post 8 rang up six hits to score six runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 13-8.

Roanoke rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain the lead at 15-13. Post 8 was unable to produce an answer in the top of the seventh inning, leaving it with a two-run loss.

Halifax County Post 8 had a dozen hits in the contest, with Fulcher leading the team with four hits. Duffer, Nathan Comer, Trey Comer, Jackson Newton, Anthony Conner, Barker, Dylan Newton and Colby Hancock all had one hit.

Nathan Comer led the team in RBIs with two. Duffer, Fulcher, Jackson Newton, Conner, Barker, Dylan Newton and Hancock each had one RBI.
