The Halifax County American Legion Post 8 Junior Legion baseball team, fresh off of a holiday break, topped Martinsville 10-6 Monday night in Martinsville to kick off the regular-season stretch run.
Halifax County Post 8 banged out 10 hits in the win, with Nathan Comer, Jackson Newton and Dylan Newton leading the team with two hits each. Newton had four RBIs in the game, and Comer had three.
Thomas Lee, Kyle Barker, Anthony Conner and Colby Hancock each had one hit for Post 8. Shabazz Buster, Barker, and Conner each had one RBI.
Barker started the game on the mound for Post 8, going six innings in getting the win. He struck out two batters, walked one and gave up only two earned runs. Evan Clark got the save, recording two strikeouts and allowing one walk.
Martinsville picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Post 8 answered in the top of the third inning when Dylan Newton hit a single and scored on a hit by Comer to tie the game at 1-1.
Post 8 rallied for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Hancock led off with a hit and walks to Clark and Dylan Newton loaded the bases. A walk to Buster forced in Hancock, a single from Barker scored Clark and a walk to Comer forced in Newton.
Three runs in the top of the fifth inning gave Post 8 a 9-1 advantage. A two-RBI hit from Jackson Newton and a walk that forced in a run accounted for the scoring.
Martinsville answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to five runs at 9-4. Post 8 added a run in the top of the seventh inning when Barker reached base on an error and later scored on a hit from Comer.
While Martinsville added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, it was not enough as Post 8 hung on for the win.
Post 8 will be back in action on Wednesday, facing Patrick County in a game set for 7 p.m. at Patrick County High School.
