The South Boston Recreation Department plans to pursue a 2020-21 basketball season.

The season will take place provided the area’s COVID-19 numbers remain low and that the Virginia High School League permits high school teams to play this year, according to a news release from the department.

The recreation department will follow all VHSL guidelines for COVID-19 and basketball as well. The league will begin sign ups starting Monday, Oct. 19, at the recreation department located at the old armory, 1620 Jeffress Bvld. in South Boston.

All persons entering the building during sign ups must follow all rules of social distancing including wearing a mask. All league participants also will be required to sign a waiver form. Proof of age must be provided, league age as of Sept. 30.

The age groups are Mites (ages 5-7), Peewees (ages 8-10), Midgets (ages 11-12), Junior Teens (ages 13-14) and Senior Teens (ages 15-18).

Each participant who signs up on the announced dates will be given a tryout date in November. All participants who try out will be drafted or assigned to a team. The team coach will contact players with further information such as practice times, equipment and game dates.
