Senior Trey Comer drove in a game-high three runs and Halifax County remained undefeated on the season with a 10-2 win over Mecklenburg County in Piedmont District action Tuesday evening.Â
Halifax (12-0, 8-0 Piedmont) came out firing on all cylinders, scoring four runs in its first at-bat. Junior Mason Hatcher got the Comets on the board with his single to center field that scored senior Joshua Gunn and Hatcher doubled down on Halifax’s lead moments later when he scored on a wild pitch. Comer rounded things out with his two-run base knock to center that plated seniors Tyler Collins and Dakii Chandler and made it 4-0.Â
Collins pushed the Comets’ lead to five with his RBI groundout in the top of the third. Mecklenburg got a run back in the fourth on sophomore Matthew Lynch’s RBI fielder’s choice to third.Â
Halifax didn’t let the Phoenix hold the momentum for long, countering with a crooked three runs to build its lead to seven. Chandler started things off with his RBI double to left and Comer’s double to left plated Chandler and made it 7-1. An error several moments later plated Comer, giving the Comets a seven-run lead heading into the final innings.Â
Showing grit, Mecklenburg got a run back in the sixth when Lynch smacked a single to right that scored senior Jaxton Shook to make it a six-run game.Â
The Comets concluded the scoring in the seventh when junior Jayke Owen scored on a wild pitch and Grayson Parker scored on a double play ball that led to the final score.Â
Comer led Halifax with a game-high three hits to go along with his three RBIs while Gunn smacked two hits. Hatcher, Collins, Chandler and senior Preston Simpson drove in a run apiece to go along with Comer’s three RBIs.Â
Sophomore Cole Bowen got the win on the bump, scattering five hits and two runs while striking out four in six innings thrown. Gunn closed out the seventh, giving up a single hit and striking out one.
Lynch led the Phoenix with two RBIs.Â
Halifax returns to action Thursday when it takes on Patrick County on the road at 5 p.m.Â
