The Halifax County High School golf team put itself in a good position to challenge for the Piedmont District championship Thursday with a 24-shot win over Magna Vista High School at Forest Park Country Club in Martinsville in the first of the season’s series of Piedmont District tournaments.

Halifax County High School posted a round of 317, a five-shot improvement over the team’s round last Monday in the season-opening John Scott Heritage Invitational Tournament at London Downs Golf Club in Forest.

The Comets’ Willoughby Gasperini led the Comets’ effort and earned medalist honors with a 5-under-par round of 67.

“Willoughby had a good round, one of his best rounds,” said Comets head coach David Day.

“He had one eagle and five or six birdies. A big turning point for him came on the third or fourth hole. He thought he had hit the ball out of bounds or out of play and one of the kids playing in his group found his ball up next to a tree where he had a clear shot. It could have been a two-or-three-shot swing, and he converted that.

“After that, he made a lot of putts, hit a lot of good shoot shots and had a great round.”

Will Abdi followed with a round of 77.

“Will didn’t hit the ball that great, but he worked his way through it,” Day pointed out.

“I’m excited about the way he handled that. He could have fallen apart and shot a high score, but he came through and shot another good score for us.”

Ryan Corona carded a round of 84, and Harrison Culpepper posted a round of 87 to record the final two scores to count toward the Comets’ team total.

“We’re making improvements every time we go out,” Day said.

“Ryan came through for us this time. He had a better round and is making steady improvement. Harrison fell off a little bit, but he’s still right there shooting in the 80s. Jaxon Lloyd was in the 80s. Cameron Burnett had a bad day at it, but it was his first time out, and we liked him getting the experience, and we think he may be able to contribute later on in the season.”

Day noted that three other Comets golfer made the trip and played as alternates.

“We took three players that had not had a chance to play in a match before,” he explained.

“They all scored around 90 or so and had some spells where they hit some really good shots and made some birdies. I think in the next couple of district matches we will have them compete as one of our top six players and give them a chance to prove themselves.”

The Halifax County High School golf team will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to Tuscarora Country Club to compete in the second of the series of Piedmont District regular-season tournaments. Tuesday’s match is set for a 2 p.m. start.
