Halifax County High School’s J.D. Cunningham, shown here competing at the Piedmont District championships on Tuesday, was a first-team selection for the all-Piedmont District golf team.

J.D. Cunningham finished with a round of 76 to lead the Halifax County High School golf team to a second-place finish at the Piedmont District championships, held Tuesday at Forest Park Country Club in Martinsville.

Halifax County, with Jaxon Lloyd firing an 81, Will Long an 84 and Peyton Wallace an 87, finished with a team score of 328, nine strokes behind Patrick County for the team championship.

Jackson Newton finished with a round of 93 and Cameron Burnett with a round of 99 for the Comets, who placed three players on the all-Piedmont District team, including Cunningham, a first-team selection, and Long and Newton, both second team selections.

Halifax County finished eight strokes ahead of Magna Vista High School (336), while GW-Danville High School finished with a team score of 366 and Bassett High School with a 380 at the district championships.

Magna Vista’s Wil Gardner was medalist with a round of 73, followed by Patrick County’s Wesley Roberson with a 75.
