The Halifax County High School lady Comets volleyball team traveled to Louisa County High School on Tuesday to compete in the first round of the regionals tournament in which they picked up a victory in five sets 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 21-25 and 15-3.

The lady Comets were led by Trinity Martin, who had 14 kills and served the last seven points of the fifth set, and Sarah Watts and Emma Payne who set up their teammates with 15 assists a piece.

“The girls came to fight. You always, always worry about your players when you have a long road trip. Will they get off the bus? They did tonight, and the girls knew that they had to play at their best to get the win,” said head coach Sunshine Martin.

She added, “We still had some unforced errors but what we didn’t have was the snowball effect when we made mistakes. The girls rebounded well and never shut down. Our passing was much better last night which always helps our setters out.”

Watts had one ace, 15 assists, seven digs and three kills; Martin had four aces, one assist, 18 digs, 14 kills and one block; Shamya Hankins had one ace, eight digs, seven kills and one block; Madison Barnes had one ace, 16 digs and five kills; Arissa Conner had three digs; Jadyn Harlow had one ace, two digs and three kills; Kylie Satterfield had two aces and 34 digs; Payne had 15 assists and 12 digs; and Tessy Henderson had two digs, seven kills and two blocks in the regional win.

“We also did a great job of getting more players involved in kills and they put the ball down when they needed. Our next game at Western Albemarle is going to be a different type of match. We are going to need big hands at the net, but for now we are going to enjoy that first round regional win,” Martin concluded.

The lady Comets hold a regular season record of 9-11 but lost in the first round of the Piedmont District tournament on Oct. 21 to Patrick County.

After their Piedmont District loss, the girls were able to rebound and pick up a hard-fought victory on the road versus Louisa County in the first round of the regional tournament.

The lady Comets had their sights set on another victory taking on Western Albemarle on Thursday in the second round of the regional tournament.
