The George Washington girls basketball team knocked Halifax County 58-40 in Piedmont District action Friday night.Â
GW (5-6, 4-1 Piedmont) broke open a tight game at the half with a strong third quarter that saw the Eagles outscore Halifax (8-5, 2-3) 11-4 to take a double-digit advantage into the final frame. Sophomore Joslyn Cobbs led GW’s attack with five points in the frame while junior Kahzyia Gabriel-Dobbins added four.Â
The Eagles continued their solid performance in the fourth, outscoring the Comets 20-13. Sophomore Saniyah Felton paced GW with nine points in the frame while Cobbs dropped five and freshman Fadrianna Saunders checked in close behind with four.Â
Things opened up tight as the two sides played to a 15-15 tie in the first quarter. Senior Shamya Hankins paced Halifax in the opening frame with six points while sophomore Olivia Seamster added four.Â
It was much of the same in the second with GW outscoring Halifax 12-8 in the stanza to take a 27-23 lead into the break. Felton and sophomore Teasia Garland paced the Eagles with four points apiece while Hankins led the Comets with four.Â
Cobbs led all scorers with 17 points while Felton chipped in with 15 and Garland added 11 to give GW three players in double-digit scoring.Â
Hankins scored a team-high 14 points for Halifax while junior Malaysha Claiborne added eight and Seamster and senior Jadyn Harlow added six apiece.Â
Halifax returns to action Jan. 10 when it hosts Bassett in Piedmont District action at 7 p.m.Â
GW takes the court again Jan. 10 when it hosts Patrick County at 7 p.m.Â
