Halifax County Middle School and athletic director Justin Saunders have announced the dates for basketball tryouts, as well as the instructions and guidelines that must be followed in order to participate.

Boys basketball tryouts are slated to begin on Jan. 4, with a makeup date set for Jan. 6. Girls basketball tryouts will be held on Jan. 5 and the make up date is Jan. 7.

In order to participate, all prospective players must call to reserve a time slot beginning Monday. To reserve a time slot call Saunders at 572-4123, or Becky Howerton at 572-4110.

The time slots will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. and 5:50 to 6:50 p.m. Make up dates will have the same time slots.

In order to participate in tryouts all players must have an up to date VHSL physical and be in good academic standing.

Time slots must be reserved by Jan. 4. If a student does not call in they will not be able to try out.

Each time slot will have a maximum of 10 students. All CDC guidelines will be followed, and all parents are asked to make sure their child has a mask and a bottle of water with their name on it when they come to try out.

Temperature checks and medical screenings will be done while the students are still in their vehicles, so parents are asked not to drop their child off before their temperature is checked by a coach or administrator.

Parents are asked to drive to the bus parking lot entrance at the back of the middle school and stay in the vehicle until the screening is complete.

All students will enter through the main bus lot doors and will exit through the rear gym doors. Parents also are asked not to park in the same line as entering and to be prompt in picking up their child or children.

Locker room use is prohibited at this time, so all students should dress appropriately for basketball tryouts before entering the gym.
