The Halifax County High School junior varsity boys basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 54-46 win over Magna Vista High School at Magna Vista High School in Ridgeway.

With the win, the Comets improved their season record to 9-4 overall.

Tyree Dunkley led the Comets in scoring with 14 points that included one 3-point basket and a perfect 3-3 mark at the free throw line. Michael Spraggins chipped in 13 points and Myquan Williams and Otis Slayton added nine points each.

The Comets led 46-44 when they broke open what had been a close game with an 8-2 run over the last 1:13 of the game. Slayton triggered the run by hitting a short shot in the paint and Dunkley hit a layup off of steal with 50 seconds left in the game.

Magna Vista High School countered with a pair of free throws with 40 seconds left to make the score 50-46. The Comets came right back, getting layups from both Dunkley and Williams to seal the 54-46 win.

Halifax County High School struggled somewhat in the third quarter, hitting only three field goals in the seven-minute span. One of them, a 3-pointer from Williams at the buzzer to end the quarter, took the Comets from a narrow three-point lead to a six-point 42-36 lead at the end of the period.

The Comets appeared to be in good shape in the first half, pulling away to an 11-point lead at one juncture in the first quarter, and building a 10-point lead in the second quarter before settling for a nine-point edge at 34-25 at halftime.

Dunkley scored 10 of Halifax County High School’s 18 first-quarter points and seven different Comets players scored in the first half.
