As could be expected, there was some disappointment as the Halifax County High School boys cross country team took a narrow 27-31 loss Thursday at the hands of Park View High School of South Hill at its home course at Edmunds Park.

Despite the loss Halifax County High School head coach David Riddle said he was pleased with his team’s effort.

“The times are coming down,” Riddle pointed out.

“This course is one of the toughest courses around. Last week we ran a flat course in Danville and we ran some faster times here. As far as effort from the team, I was pleased.”

Park View High School’s Jacob Fadool won the boys meet, touring the 3.1-mile Edmunds Park layout in 18 minutes and 12 seconds. Comets runner Drew Salley finished second with a time of 19:12, Justin Zincone of Park View High School (19:16), Salvador Adrian of Park View High School (19:41) and Chase Powell of Halifax County High School (21:17) rounded out the top five finishers.

“I felt I ran a pretty good race,” Salley said.

“I beat my personal best time by 40 seconds. I felt pretty good and was keeping up with the guy in front of me (Fadool), and he ran the fastest I have ever seen. I kept up with him for a little while, and he was really pushing. That’s why I did well.”

Halifax County High School placed nine runners in the top 15.

The Comets’ Lydia Wenzel won the girls race, turning in a time of 25:41. Wenzel beat teammate Abby Casen to the finish by 51 seconds in earning the win.

“I pushed really hard to get where I was,” Wenzel said.

“The hardest part is the heat and the hills. I have asthma and it makes it a lot harder for me, but I think I did well with the heat and my difficulty with breathing.”

Wenzel credits Casen with making her a better runner by pushing her.

“Abby is very good also,” Wenzel pointed out.

“We’ve been pushing each other all summer, and we’ve been practicing. We encourage each other to do better.”

Casen came in with a time of 27:32 in her runner-up finish with Comets runner Mallory Salley (28:14) Angie Hernandez of Park View High School (30:24) and Morgan Crenshaw of Halifax County High School rounding out the top five finishers.

Park View High School did not have enough runners to count for an official team score so there was no overall team meet winner for the girls race.

Riddle said as is the case with early-season meets a lot of questions abound, and there were questions heading into Thursday’s meet.

“Coach Saunders ( team assistant coach Rebecca Saunders) and I were nervous going in,” Riddle noted.

“We didn’t know what we were going to get dealing with the heat and humidity early in the season. This course here at Edmunds Park is one of the toughest courses around.Overall, everybody was either knocking time off of what they ran last week or right in the ballpark from where they were last week. To push the times like that on a hot day, I was extremely impressed.”

Riddle said the runners’ times are not where they need to be yet, but the season is young and work will continue.

“We’re not where we need to be and where we want to be,” he pointed out.

“We’re still dealing with, as we always are, a few nagging injuries that you tend to get at the beginning of the season. We’re getting to where we need to be. We’re not quite there yet, but we are pleased overall with the effort from the team.”
