Errors proved costly to the Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team Thursday night in a 3-0 loss to Bluestone High School at Halifax County High School.
Bluestone High School topped the Comets in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-13.
Thursday’s loss dropped the Comets’ record to 0-2 on the season.
A total of 26 errors, 11 service errors and 15 hitting errors, played a key role in the Comets’ loss.
“That’s 26 points,” noted Comets head coach Meg Bane.
“We gave the equivalent of a whole set away just on service and hitting errors alone. That doesn’t count errors in other areas. Sometimes it’s tougher when you beat yourself than when the other team beats you.”
Bane said the youth of the Comets team, a team over half of which is comprised of players that competed on the Comets junior varsity team last season, is a factor.
“We came out in the first set and had a lot of energy,” Bane said, “but we’re young, and when you’re young, you sometimes play in an immature way mentally. That means you make an error and then pout about it. We talk about grind, let it go and hustle harder.
“You could read our body language in the second set where we kind of shut down,” she added.
Halifax County High School led early in the first set only to see Bluestone High School surge midway through the set and pull away to the seven-point win.
The Comets fell behind early in the second set trailing 7-2 at an early juncture and trailed 17-7 just past the midpoint of the set. Bluestone High School had it easy from there in posting the 25-13 win.
Halifax County High School led twice in the early going of the third set, fell behind, but was still in the hunt at the midpoint trailing 13-9. Bluestone rang up six straight points after that to take a 21-9 lead and sealed the overall match win with a 25-13 win over the Comets in the third set.
The Comets go on the road Tuesday to face Magna Vista High School in their Piedmont District opener and then will face Gretna High School Wednesday night at Halifax County High School.
Bane said she is optimistic the team can turn things around soon.
“We’re still early in the season,” she pointed out.
“The girls are responding and trying to grow as a unit. Hopefully we will figure it out soon.”
