Three of five Halifax County High School wrestlers earned medals by placing in the top three and helped propel the Comets to a sixth-place finish in the team standings in Saturday’s Rocket Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Person High School in Roxboro, North Carolina.
Comets 145-pounder Alex Driggs took second place in his weight class to lead the team. Halifax County High School 113-pounder Bryan Vicks and Comets 285-pounder Zyon Wilson finished third in their respective weight classes.
Comets 120-pounder Colin Saunders placed fourth in his weight class after winning two of his four matches. J.T. Francis, competing in the 138-pound weight class, gave a good effort but failed to win any of his four matches.
Halifax County High School head coach David Riddle noted the team’s results were impressive considering only five wrestlers competed.
“To only have five wrestlers competing, and to medal three (wrestlers), and have one other with a .500 record and come out with a sixth-place team finish was pretty impressive,” Riddle said.
“Last year we had a really rough go at it in the Roxboro tourney, as sometimes happens the first time on the mat after Christmas break. We were worried that some of the December injuries would also be lingering as well. But, as a whole, we had a much better tournament than we had last year.”
Riddle noted he was pleased with the effort of his wrestlers.
“Vicks was wrestling up at 113 and came back with a win in his last match to come in third after a slow start to the day,” Riddle pointed out.
“Driggs had an excellent first match, and wrestled hard in his championship match but just came up short to finish third. Zyon was very impressive picking up two wins in his first dual tourney, and tying for first (place) with two other wrestlers. He ended up getting third when total points scored for the team were calculated.”
Saunders and Francis also fared well, Riddle said.
“Saunders had a decent day as well to get to the third-place match and end up fourth,” noted Riddle, “and while J.T. did not win, he is continuing to improve each and every time he steps on the mat.
“This group has a lot of heart and keeps on fighting each time out,” added Riddle.
“We will look to use the rest of January to continue to improve and gear up for the post-season.”
Host Person High School won the tournament with 143.5 points, edging Chapel Hill (North Carolina) High School, which tallied 139 points. GW placed fifth with 48.5 points and the Comets placed sixth with 41 points.
Halifax County High School will host its only home wrestling contest of the season Wednesday night. The Comets will host the third round of a series of Piedmont District quad events, with the first match of the night starting at 6 p.m.
