DANVILLE — Members of the Halifax County outdoor boys and girls track teams competed in the Region 4D tournament Tuesday afternoon at the newly-completed track at George Washington High School.
Freshman Destiny Jackson had a successful postseason debut, winning the gold in the girls long jump with a 17-00.50 while placing eighth in the 100-meter dash with a combined 13.38 and 13th in the 200-meter dash with a combined 27.34.
Sophomore Hanna Sutphin had a solid afternoon as well, taking home the gold in the triple jump with an average of 35-7.00 while finishing sixth in the long jump with a 16-02.50.
Sophomore Jade Syphax turned in a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a 50.65 while freshman Justice Key placed 10th in the 300-meter hurdles with a 53.76.
On the boys end, senior Javeion Gooden turned in a solid performance, finishing third in the shot put with a 45-09.50 and 12th in the discus with a 108-03.00.
Sophomore Jamal Bellamy turned in a trio of top-10 performances, placing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16:05), sixth in the triple jump (40-06.00) and seventh in the long jump with a 20-01.00.
In all, the Comets had a combined 17 members compete in the regional finals.
On the boys end, senior Isiah McCargo (200-meter), senior Mark Betts (400-meter), senior Amauriyen Jones (800-meter, long jump), Bellamy (110-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump) and Gooden (discus, shot put) all competed for Halifax.
On the girls end, Jackson (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and long jump), senior Ashante Paige, senior Destiny Williams (100-meter), freshman Justice Key (200-meter,300-meter hurdles), junior Kyla Clauden (400-meter dash), freshman Cheyenne Cline (1600-meter), Syphax (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), Sutphin (long jump, triple jump), sophomore Ava Williams (long jump, triple jump), junior London Stovall (discus, shot put), sophomore Malia Mitchell (discus, shot put) and junior Egypt Boxley (discus, shot put) all competed.
Jones turned in a 13th-place finish in the 800-meter run with a combined 2:09.60 while Gooden finished 12th in the discus with a combined 108-03.00.
Halifax will conclude its season June 2-3 when it competes in the Class 4 VHSL state championship at Liberty University.
