Continuous rain on Friday and weather forecasts calling for continued rain into the early part of the coming week has led Virginia High School League officials to postpone the Class 5 State Baseball Tournament Final Four to Thursday and Friday.
Halifax County High School was scheduled to face Mills Godwin High School in one of Friday's state tournament semi-final games at Glen Allen High School and Hickory High School was slated to face Stafford High School in the other semi-final game.
VHSL officials initially postponed Friday's games and rescheduled them for Saturday morning, with the winners to face each other in the state championship game Saturday night. Early Friday evening, VHSL officials announced the Final Four would be postponed until Thursday.
Game times for Thursday's state semi-final games will be announced on Monday.
While the Comets' game against Mills Godwin High School was postponed, Comets players and coaches took it in stride, visiting a Richmond-area baseball practice facility at which players got in an hour-and-a-half of batting practice and workouts.
Comets head coach Kenneth Day said the players handled the uncertainty surrounding Friday's game situation well.
"We went to the field and stayed until we found out what the situation was," Day explained.
"Once we learned we were not going to play today (Friday) we coaches got together and called around and found a place we could go to and work out.
"It's not a good situation to ride over two-and-a-half hours and end up with a day trip to go hit in an indoor practice facility and turn around and go back home," Day added, "but what can you do about the weather?"
Day said he feels his players would play well regardless of when they got to play.
"I think if they (VHSL officials) called us and said come back and play tomorrow (Saturday) we would be right back up here ready to play," Day remarked.
"I think the kids are eager to play. We will put them through some things next week and get them prepared to play on Thursday and Friday."
